The Post Office announced earlier this month that 74 Crown offices will be closed/franchised to WHSmith, downgrading services and putting 800 jobs at risk. As a result, in total 224 Crowns – 60% of the flagship branch network – will have been closed since 2013.
Public money is used to finance the closure and franchising of the Crown office network, despite the public being opposed to the loss of these offices and the concomitant reduction in the quality of service and jobs in franchised shops.
That’s why I’m supporting the CWU in their call for a halt to the closures and for government to bring together stakeholders and industry experts to develop a new strategy that safeguards the future of the Post office.
