Help to Buy has failed – we need to build council homes

Far too often the Government’s Help to Buy scheme subsidises the most well-off in society. It’s important that the next Labour Government ensures that help is targeted to those who need it the most, not those who can already afford to own a home. That’s what I said at yesterdays Public Accounts Committee meeting.

The chronic shortage of homes in Stoke-on-Trent and across the country can’t be answered by simply tinkering at the edges of rent costs and increasing the small percentages of affordable homes ensured on new developments. We need ten’s of thosuands of quality homes that real people can afford. Not more of a failed ‘help to buy’ policy that has simply helped those already in a position to buy and helped further inflate housing prices.

It’s time for a new deal on housing and you can read Labour’s radical plan to end our housing crisis by visiting http://labour.org.uk/…/20…/06/12081_19-Land-for-the-Many.pdf
