I am a passionate supporter of the #RaiseTheRate campaign.
Since 2010 we have seen deep cuts imposed upon our colleges and sixth forms, with the rate being frozen at £4,000 per student since 2010. This has caused pressure on schools and colleges, with 51% cutting language courses and 78% have reduced student support services or extra-curricular activities. A further 76% of colleges believe the funding they have received will not be sufficient to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The increase of £200 per student proposed by the Chancellor on Wednesday is a step in the right direction, but it doesn’t go far enough. I will continue to campaign for a £760 boost, so that our schools and colleges get the funding they need.
